SOMGRAM 40
Esomeprazole 40 mg Gastro-Resistant Tablets
Product Overview
SOMGRAM 40 contains Esomeprazole 40 mg, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce excessive gastric acid production. It is indicated in the management of acid-related gastrointestinal conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, and certain conditions associated with excessive gastric acid secretion.
The gastro-resistant formulation is designed to protect the active ingredient from degradation by stomach acid, allowing esomeprazole to reach the site where it is absorbed.
Composition
Each gastro-resistant tablet contains:
- Esomeprazole Magnesium IP
Equivalent to Esomeprazole 40 mg - Excipients: q.s.
- Colour: Red Oxide of Iron
What is Esomeprazole?
Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole and belongs to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class of medicines. It works by selectively inhibiting the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase proton pump in gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing the final step of gastric acid secretion.
By decreasing gastric acid production, esomeprazole helps relieve acid-related symptoms and supports healing of acid-induced damage to the oesophagus and other gastrointestinal tissues.
Mechanism of Action
Esomeprazole suppresses gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the proton pump located in the secretory canaliculi of gastric parietal cells.
It binds to the proton pump after activation in the acidic environment of the parietal cell and inhibits the secretion of hydrogen ions into the stomach. This results in a substantial reduction in both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion.
The reduction in gastric acidity helps provide symptomatic relief and promotes healing in acid-related gastrointestinal disorders.
Therapeutic Indications
SOMGRAM 40 may be prescribed for the management of:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Healing and maintenance treatment of erosive esophagitis

The appropriate indication, dosage and duration depend on the patient's clinical condition and should be determined by a healthcare professional.
